Motorcyclists face serious risks from left-turn accidents

Motorcyclists are often well aware of their injury risks. Many accidents are caused by other drivers, but motorcyclists have less protection and are at greater risk of being injured. This can happen if they get rear-ended at a stoplight, are run off the road by an inattentive driver, are struck while going through a two-way stop and in a wide variety of other ways.

But some experts point out that one of the most common accidents is a left-turn accident. This does not actually mean that the motorcyclist is turning at all, but may simply be driving straight with the right of way. Another driver fails to yield and turns left in front of the motorcycle, causing the rider to strike the side of the vehicle.

Why is this so dangerous?

One reason why this is dangerous is that it can happen without warning. If a car is waiting to turn left on a two-way road, the motorcyclist knows that the driver should wait for them to pass before doing so. But if the driver suddenly turns at the last second, it may be too late for the motorcyclist to avoid the crash.

Additionally, there are not many evasive actions they can take. If the motorcyclist swerves to the left, that just means they are potentially driving into oncoming traffic lanes, which could cause a head-on collision. But if they swerve to the right, they are moving in the same direction as the vehicle that is turning, so they may not be able to avoid the collision.

Either way, left-turn accidents can happen in a split second, but they could change a person’s life forever. Those who have been seriously injured need to know what legal options they have to seek compensation.
