When most people think of pedestrian accidents, they likely envision busy intersections, crosswalks and jaywalkers. However, many collisions between vehicles and pedestrians occur in a location that you likely visit daily – parking lots.
Whether it’s a grocery store or a shopping mall, parking lots are high-traffic areas where drivers and pedestrians share the same space. Unfortunately, that combination sometimes ends in catastrophe.
Hidden dangers
Parking lots may seem safe compared to busy roads, but there are several hidden dangers, such as:
- Distracted drivers: Once drivers enter a parking lot, they often become preoccupied with finding a parking spot, checking their phone, or trying to recall what they need to buy. These distractions take their attention away from people walking to and from their vehicles.
- Blind spots: Cars backing out of spaces or coming around the end of the aisles have limited visibility, especially around large SUVs and trucks. Children and smaller adults can easily be hidden from view.
- Distracted pedestrians: Drivers aren’t the only ones distracted. Pedestrians may be juggling shopping bags, checking receipts or wrangling kids and fail to be alert to what’s happening around them.
- No traffic signals or clear right-of-way: Most parking lots lack traffic lights and signage indicating lane direction or who has the right-of-way. This can cause confusion and assumptions by drivers and pedestrians.
Everyone has a role in parking lot safety. Drivers should drive slowly and avoid distractions. They need to check their mirrors and blind spots carefully, particularly when backing up. If there is uncertainty about who has the right-of-way, drivers should always yield to pedestrians.
Pedestrians can do their part, as well. It’s always crucial to stay alert and avoid using your phone while walking. Stick to designated walkways, if available. Hold children’s hands or keep them within arm’s reach. Don’t assume that drivers can see you; therefore, make eye contact with them, especially when crossing.
Even when pedestrians do take precautions, parking lot accidents will happen. A collision with a vehicle can leave an individual with life-changing injuries. Compensation can help cover medical expenses and lost income.
